Today was our second bookclub and I am surprised at how well it is going. I have to admit when i first heard about the bookclub i was worried we would only be able to talk about the books for 5 minutes or so but we seem to be managing hour long conversations which is fantastic and the scones and the tea make it even more enjoyable.
This month we read "Mao's Last Dancer" by Li Cunxin and is based on his life from being a poor peasant boy in communist China, to being a world class dancer. This book was a real eye opener for me you hear about poverty and harsh living conditions that people endure but this book descibes that lifestyle in intimate detail from having to share one piece of pork between 8 people to than having to share 2 beds between the 8 of them. It also shows the effect that the chinese government propaganda was having on the people at the time.
I really enjoyed the book it was easy to read and interesting. My only critisicm would be that it was 500 pages which in itself isnt a problem but i definately think there was parts of the book that could have been left out.
Our next book is 'Have a little faith' by Mitch Albom. Has anyone read it?
I just wanted to say thankyou to everyone for your well wishes in the previous post, my friend is doing well and is surrounded by lots of love. And to new followers, a big HELLO, and thanks for joining!

  1. I haven't read Have a Little Faith, but I did read Tuesdays with Morrie and loved it. And I've heard that The Five People you meet in Heaven is fabulous. So, I'm sure it's a good pick!

It's been a while since I've been in a book club. Might be time to join a new one...

I wrote you a letter last night. Off to the post office today to send it, along with my stationery swap parcel (in just under the deadline!)

  4. Book clubs are so fun. I mean, I wouldn't know because I've never been part of one but the Slow Reader's Club online, but they always seem so fun. I have not read Mitch's new book yet, but please tell how it is. It's been on "to-read" list for a long time.

  5. The picture is cute! I'm not part of a book club but it would be so much fun. A few friends and I tried to start one but it didn't happen.
