Brain zapper

Watching TV turns me into a zombie, yes literally the walking dead. I will sit down to watch something for ten minutes and emerge from a television coma 3 hours later. Its like I am hypnotised and cant pull myself away. After work when I am tired and just want to switch off , switching on the television seems like the easiest option.
After 23 years I have realised that this is not the healthiest or most constructive way to unwind. Especially now that working full time means I have less me time, I don't want to be wasting it all watching tele. The winter months are just around the corner and I think it is time to break bad habits before it gets too hard.
I am all about moderation and completely switching off isn't really practical in my household so I am limiting myself to watching one show a night. On the weekends I am going to try to only watch two hours a day - max. I use to think people who gave up TV were crazy but now I am thinking they may be onto something. I am sure I will struggle to give up my emotional attachment to the cast of my favorite shows but I think it's time to make the break.
What is your routine after work? How do you switch off and unwind? Or do you stay active till bed? Have you given up TV? I am keen to change my routine and would love to be inspired.


  1. Wow, this is so impressive! I am the exact same as you--I definitely watch tv to unwind. I am attached to certain shows: American Idol, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, One Tree Hill. I'm not home very often so I record them and watch them late when I come home. You're right that it's not always the healthiest, although I think that for me, I'd benefit more from shutting down my computer when I'm at home!

  2. We have a TV, but it is only connected to the DVD player and the Playstation, so we can't watch regular TV. I usually will watch one episode a night of the current series we are watching on DVD. On Friday or Saturday nights we may watch a few episodes in a row. We really drag out watching series, as we don't usually rent them, we get them for birthdays and Christmas and make them last. But I do waste a lot of time on the internet in the evenings...

  3. Like Genki, the internet has traditionally been my weakness. I was doing a pretty good job of avoiding tv until I quit my job to relocate with my boyfriend. We don't have cable but now that I have days free I have been streaming a lot of television episodes on Netflix. I have watched as many as five episodes in a day. It's horrible.

    I am trying to take more walks to keep me out in the daylight and away from my computer AND the tv. I think your limits are a good idea!

  4. I used to turn on the TV just because. And not really watch anything. But I've decided to keep it off so I don't get tempted. I usually read now when I want to unwind (or play games haha like Plants vs. Zombies).

    And it is a shame that you didn't go home for Easter. Would have been awesome if we couldn't met up.

  5. I'm terrible with the TV. I'll watch rubbish simply because it's easier to stay still and not do anything. Now I only watch it when I know I can spare the time - I didn't watch it tonight because I wanted to blog instead!

  7. We don't have a TV. We watch DVDs on our computer sometimes, but that's it. I cannot even tell you how great this is. My husband grew up without a TV, and I gave it up when I moved in with him 10 years ago. I've never been happier. You don't realize how awful some of the subliminal messages are - beauty, self-image, body image, all that "you're not as good as the beautiful people on TV" crap - until you give it up. I know I am a bit extreme about it, and I probably spend too much time on the internet, but... aside from the awful commercials, the other thing I hate about TV is how it dictates your schedule.

    I wish you luck in cutting back; I can almost guarantee it will make you happier.
